RED WING — A Columbia Heights man is accused of criminal sexual conduct with a 13-year-old girl who was visiting Treasure Island Resort & Casino with her parents.
Tony James Kortas, 39, was charged Monday in Goodhue County District Court with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Judge Lawrence Clark set unconditional bail at $200,000. Kortas posted a non-cash bond on Tuesday, according to court documents.
Kortas approached the girl at the casino's bowling alley on July 5 and invited her to his room for pizza, according to the complaint. After getting to Kortas' hotel room, the girl told authorities he produced a pint-sized bottle of blue liquid, which he refused to identify, and told her to drink it or "he would murder her." The girl reported feeling dizzy and nauseated after drinking the contents.
The girl's family reported her missing at 12:25 a.m. July 6. Treasure Island security used surveillance cameras to track her to Kortas' room. When authorities knocked on the door of his room, the girl exited at 12:28 a.m.
Authorities say when they questioned Kortas about what he was doing in his room with the minor, Kortas responded, "What girl?"
The girl told authorities that "he touched me in a way that I did not want to be touched." When Kortas allegedly continued, she asked him to stop, and he responded "too bad" and held a pillow over her face, she told investigators.
The charges carry a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $40,000 fine.
